Positivity vs Optimism

At a recent executive team coaching session, I invited the team members to reflect on and share what moods they observed they were in – most said a mood of positivity and optimism.

These two moods are often called the same. I invited they reflect on the distinctions and after a great discussion, the team members distinguished positivity and optimism as:

  1. Present vs Future
Positivity is about a present state of mind – seeing the brighter side of things in the present moment. Optimism is about a future state of mind – it’s about holding a belief in what’s possible, despite the challenges and adversity.

  2. Relief vs Resilience
Positivity is infectious and brings lightness and relief to the present moment. Optimism provides access to deeper levels of resourcefulness. Optimism replenishes resilience.

  3. External vs Internal
Positivity is influenced by factors outside of one’s control – “the sunshine made me feel so positive about life.” Optimism comes from an internal sense of conviction and belief – “I accept the uncertainty and believe we will find a way through”.

As a leader and a team member, be mindful of the distinctions and ask yourself, “to have greater impact, what is most important I lead more from, positivity or optimism?”
