Recognition vs Appreciation

During a recent coaching conversation, a coachee and I explored the distinctions between recognition and appreciation. Similar, but different. I thought I’d share them given how important both are in fostering effective working relationships. As relational beings, we are intrinsically motivated by what others value from and in us.

These distinctions, like many, are helpful until they are not. I offer them to help you see the differences and the hidden potential:

·       We recognise others for what they do, we appreciate others for who they are

·       We recognise others expertise, we appreciate others essence

·       We recognise others for their help, we appreciate others for how they made us feel

·       We recognise others effort, we appreciate others impact

·       We recognise others because of our authority, we appreciate others because of our authenticity

Most important, both happen through expression, not through intention.

As we navigate the lockdown and the challenges ahead of us, I encourage you take the opportunities to express your appreciation to your family, friends, and colleagues for what they mean to you.

I so appreciate you taking the time to read and reflect on this blog. Thank you for what this means.
